A Stoic’s Passage Through Frustration, Diligence, and Starting Afresh - Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024
Today’s theme presented a fascinating narrative about dissatisfaction, perseverance, and embracing new beginnings.
Our reading begins with the Four of Cups. This card may signify a sensation of dissatisfaction or boredom, a feeling of being stuck in a rut. Picture a soul yearning for something different but not knowing what that might be. The Four of Cups encourages us to take a close look at our lives and recognize the potential hidden opportunities that we might be overlooking due to our fixation with the things we don’t have.
The famous Stoic philosopher, Seneca, once said:
“It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.”
Reflect on what this quote implies for your current situation. It suggests that our dissatisfaction often stems from desire, not an actual lack. Could it be that by wanting more, you’re failing to appreciate what you already have?
Next, we draw the Knight of Pentacles. This card conveys a powerful message about diligence, responsibility and a practical approach to achieving your goals. The Knight of Pentacles urges us to be patient, steady and meticulous. Unlike some other knights who favor swift action, this knight values the devotion and detailed work that true masterpieces require. This interpretation lends itself well to the theme of Stoicism, as it reminds us of the teachings of the Stoic philosopher Epictetus who said:
“No great thing is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig.”
Stand firm and diligent in your efforts. True success doesn’t come easy, and it often requires hard work and perseverance. Look at challenges as stepping stones, use them to construct the bridge that leads to your goals.
Lastly, we wrap up with The Fool card, a card of beginnings, spontaneity, leaps of faith, and believing in the impossible. When The Fool shows up, it advises to embrace the unknown, take risks and listen to your intuition. It is an encouragement to step out of your comfort zone and explore new areas of life. As the Stoic Marcus Aurelius put it:
“The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it.”
In order to grow, we must be willing to change, adapt, and occasionally, to act on a leap of faith in total uncertainty. The Fool encourages us to follow our hearts, to take that risk.
As you go about your day, remember these three cards. The Four of Cups asking you to re-evaluate your surroundings and to see the hidden opportunities. The Knight of Pentacles encouraging persistence, dedication, and hard work. Finally, The Fool, nudging you to take that leap of faith into the unknown.
Today’s journaling prompt: Reflect on what areas in your life you feel a sense of dissatisfaction. Dig deep into these feelings and ask yourself whether it’s due to a genuine lack, or a desire for more. As you consider this, also think about the areas you need to apply more diligence, and identify the unknowns that may require you to take a leap of faith. Write about these thoughts and findings.
