A determined philosopher of stoicism, identifiable by his serious expression and traditional clothing, stands at a crossroads within an enigmatic, fog-shrouded landscape. The Middle-Eastern man is firmly holding two sharply pointed swords, each signifying a crucial choice that lies ahead. Beyond the fog's mystic blanket, a sprawling vineyard, suggestive of personal abundance and self-reliance, is visible, while a sudden break in the fog allows a gleam of daylight to illuminate the grapes' lush hues. This visual rendition serves as an allegory for the philosophy of stoicism, highlighting the importance of free will, self-reliance and the pursuit of virtue in the face of uncertainty.

Theme: Clearing the Fog of Uncertainty

Today my assistant has drawn a fascinating collection of cards: the Knight of Swords, the Two of Swords, and the Nine of Pentacles. As I lay them out in front of me, I see a clear theme about navigating through times of uncertainty by relying on wisdom, and understanding that even in times of doubt, we must persist, knowing that steadfastness will lead to abundance.

Our first card, the Knight of Swords, represents focused intent and action. He is always in pursuit of truth and clarity, so quick to action that sometimes he ignores the potential consequences. However, remember Epictetus’ saying:

“First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.”

Like the Knight of Swords, we too often need to chase truth and understanding with determined fervor. Look into your heart today - what truths are you avoiding or ignoring because you’re apprehensive of the implications? When we ignore our own truths, we surrender our power, and the first step to reclaiming that power is to admit the truth to ourselves.

Next in our trio is the Two of Swords. This card speaks of stalemates, indecision, and being at a crossroads. It asks us to remove the blindfold and confront our inner turmoil. Reminiscent of Marcus Aurelius words:

“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”

The Two of Swords calls for us to gather our courage, face our fears, and make a decision. Even when the path is foggy, taking a step forward is better than not moving at all. Acknowledge the indecisiveness, but do not let it paralyze you. Choose a direction and move.

Finally, we have the Nine of Pentacles, a card of self-reliance, abundance, and completion. The lady in the card does not need extravagance to find fulfillment. She is content in her accomplishments, reminding me of Seneca’s words:

“It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.”

We often seek external validation and forget the importance of self-reliance. In grasping for more, we fail to appreciate what we have. As the Nine of Pentacles suggests, take the time to acknowledge your own strength and self-worth. Revel in your achievements - you earned it.

In today’s reading, the tarot urges us to confront truths fearlessly, not to waver at crossroads, and to acknowledge the abundance already present in our lives.

To bring the day to a close, I leave you with a journaling prompt:

Reflect on a truth you’ve been avoiding. What action can you take today to confront it? How can you celebrate your self-reliance and abundance?

May your pursuits be bold, your decisions be clear, and your self-reliance flourish.
